Abstract:
It is time to begin the construction of a real scale gravitational wave detector named as LCGT (Large-Scale Cryogenic Gravitational wave Telescope) which has 3km base-line arms underground in Kamioka mine. Big gravitational waves are generated by astronomical events such as neutron star binary coalescences or supernovas, and they reach to our earth as ripples of time and space. Gravitational wave detectors using a principle of Michelson interferometer read those ripples as a difference of distance between mirrors separately located by several kilometers away with an accuracy of 1e-19 meter! So, the gravitational wave detector requires the very low noise environment which is limited only by principle noises such as radiation pressure noise, thermal noise or shot noise and so on. In order to establish these accurate measurements, we need a special control technique to keep the distance between mirrors in the interferometer into multiple of laser wave length. In this lecture, I will talk our techniques how to measure such a small distance and how to struggle with such low noise devices for gravitational wave detection, including some talks about an intellectual real-time interferometer control system using computers.
