Abstract:
KAGRA is a cryogenic gravitational wave detector interferometer currently under construction in the Kamioka mine in Japan. Besides the cryogenic test masses, KAGRA will also rely on room temperature optical components, some of which are suspended from the Type B suspension system. Besides the optics themselves, the payload of such system also comprises a marionette to set the alignment and position sensors and actuators used to damp the resonances of the suspension itself. The position sensors are shadow sensors and the actuators are coil magnet actuators. One of each is paired together into a unit referred to as Optical Sensor and Electromagnetic Actuator (OSEM). This presentation begins with a summary of the mechanical changes made to the original payload prototype tested at TAMA300. Next, the OSEM is described and its performance as a tool for achieving control of the masses is reported. Specifically, it is shown by how much the quality factors of some of the resonances of the suspension change when using an active control system. Finally, the alignment capabilities offered by the marionette system are reported.
